I also think that very few writers are gifted enough to self-edit, as it were. (Statistically speaking, most of us are average and mediocre people after all.) So if you mindfully read and reread your work I'm sure you'll catch (most) spelling errors and storyline bloopers, but an editor should also be able to give you other input - for example, to cut it short or flesh it out, to avoid your pet phrases. It all depends on how good the editor is of course. Let's see if E can chime in with some professional anecdotes from the publishing world ... banihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17014197149063468132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17711074.post-8171869009326289322014-10-23T13:59:42.348+02:002014-10-23T13:59:42.348+02:00Faithful Place by Tana French is incredible writin...Faithful Place by Tana French is incredible writing, gives me chills.

Now I'm on page 300 of 429 of In the Woods.

Editors are important but what about writers who use none? I do admit that one of my many faults is reading too fast which makes me a sloppy reader, but I was a little bored with this one frankly so that's my excuse... But from what google shows it does seem like someone Gaiman would use, but wouldn't it be in the American Gods series?

Ela: I love and adore Jasper Fforde too, but he needs an editor he does. The final Thursday Next books are almost unreadable in my opinion, so many puns and so much wordplay it drowns the story! Which reminds me that I have a pet theory about British people appreciating this sort of humour a lot more than seems sane to us foreigners - a theory based most scientifically on an episode of Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow or maybe it was Live at the Apollo? can't remember, anyway, there was a "comedian" there whose routine was purely puns and jokes, one after the other, and the audience laughed and laughed. It's very like how you describe Blue Bloods - these girls all act as au pairs to some rich families in the US and they're more interested in boys and partying than in looking after kids. Very snobby. It's a trend in YA books at the moment to have all ones protagonists wealthy and privileged, which is pretty boring.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17711074.post-88502483840519140302013-12-03T14:58:56.740+01:002013-12-03T14:58:56.740+01:00They really make me so happy whenever i see them! ...They really make me so happy whenever i see them! banihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17014197149063468132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17711074.post-64562344940000265122013-12-03T14:42:10.970+01:002013-12-03T14:42:10.970+01:00I really like those cover designs - I was going to...I really like those cover designs - I was going to say, particularly for 'After The Funeral', but actually, they're all great!
